VANKA by Anton Chekhov

VANKA

Character sketch of Konstantin Makarich :

Konstantin Makarich is a strong lean old man of about sixty five who works as a night watch man . He is lively and agile with a smiling face and bleary eyes .He is very talkative and spend time teasing the maids.During day time he either sleeps or chats with the servants. He appears lovable,he is very funny and cuts
jokes. He uses snuff box and shares it with the dogs.He likes pinching the servants and to live without much concern about future.May be he is a victim of the social system which compels him to send vanka to Moscow. But he appears less responsible in the case of vanka. He could have brought up him .It seems that he does not like to take life seriously. But from Vanka’s words we understand that he loves his grand son

Character sketch of VANKA :

Vanka is an orphaned boy who is forced to work under Alyakin the shoemaker. He is leading a miserable life without proper food or sleep.Besides he is ill treated by his master and mistress.Vanka is afraid of his master even to write a letter to his grand dad.He is so innocent that the letter he writes is full of his childlike observations of life.Though he is very sad he never accuses his grand father. He is hopeful of his coming to save him.Vanka is nostalgic about his life in the village. He is very submissive and obedient and is ready to do
anything for his grandfather .The most appealing factor of vanka is his optimistic longing for the return to village.
